Conditions we treat

Hip & Knee Osteoarthritis

Exercise-based care to improve strength, movement confidence and day-to-day function for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis.

Understanding your concern

Start with an individual assessment.

Osteoarthritis can cause pain, stiffness and reduced confidence with activity, but movement remains an important part of management. Exercise is adapted to your current ability and gradually progressed.

Care may be delivered through individualized physiotherapy or the structured GLA:D® education and exercise program when appropriate.

What we commonly see

Common activity concerns

  • Pain or stiffness after rest
  • Difficulty walking longer distances
  • Challenges with stairs
  • Trouble getting up from a chair
  • Reduced lower-body strength
  • Uncertainty about what exercise is safe

Hip osteoarthritis

Hip osteoarthritis may cause groin, thigh or buttock pain, stiffness and difficulty with walking, stairs or footwear. Education and progressive exercise can improve strength, function and confidence with activity.

Knee osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis may cause pain, swelling, stiffness or reduced tolerance for walking, stairs and squatting. Rehabilitation focuses on leg strength, functional movement and an activity level that can be sustained.

Osteoarthritis flare-ups

Symptoms can vary from day to day. A flare-up plan may include temporarily reducing the most provocative load while maintaining comfortable movement, then gradually returning to the usual exercise level.

Preparing for joint replacement

Pre-operative rehabilitation can help you understand the recovery process and practise the mobility, strengthening and daily tasks that will be important after surgery.

Recovery after joint replacement

Post-operative rehabilitation follows surgical precautions while rebuilding range of motion, walking ability, leg strength and confidence with stairs and everyday activities.
